Meet Buthayna Kamel, Egypt's First Female Presidential Candidate

According to NPR, Egypt is nominating a woman for the first time to run for president. Buthanyna Kamel, will officially be on the ballet later this year.

The 49-year-old talk show host turned presidential candidate is currently on the campaign trail. She recently held a town hall gathering outside the main library in Egypt's famous southern city of Luxor. Not long ago, a gathering for people to vent their frustrations about the government — let alone discuss Kamel's presidential aspirations — would have been impossible. In the past, only candidates approved by Mubarak and rubber-stamped by his Parliament could run. Egyptians were convinced Mubarak was grooming his son, Gamal, to take over once he retired.

This is such great news. Egyptian women played such a pivotal role in overthrowing Hosni Murbank, that I hope this is the first step, in many steps of improving women's rights in the country.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke on Tuesday night at the U.S. - Islamic World Forum. During her speech that evening, she decried the marginalization of women in Islamic countries. She also urged the countries to provide a stronger role for women to play in politics as well. 

“You cannot have a claim to democracy if half the population is left out,” she said. “All over the world we see living proof that Islam and women’s rights are compatible.”

Ex-Social Secretary Desiree Rogers sat down with ABC News recently about her time at the White House. Airing tonight on 'NightLine', Ms. Rogers reflected upon her time as part of the Obama administration and the now infamous Sahali scandal.

One of the biggest admissions she made the interview was that if she had a chance to do it all over again she would have done less press.

Rogers also was chastised for doing magazine cover profiles, including one for the Wall Street Journal magazine in August 2009, in which she discussed how she was selling "the Obama brand." She admitted she now regrets the attention. "I would have declined more interviews that were brought to me," she said. "I'm not certain what the fascination was with me in particular. ... I think, you know, we could have managed all of that better." - Desiree Rogers

First lady Michelle Obama spoke last evening at the Operation Homefront "2011 Military Child of the Year" award ceremony in Arlington, Virgina. Operation Homefront, a national nonprofit organization that assists military families, honored five outstanding military children - one from each Service - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard. In line with this, Mrs.Obama and Jill Biden will also announce a new military family iniatitive next week.

With less than 7 hours until a federal shutdown will happen, women's health issues remain one of divisions up for debate. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz named new ChairWOMAN of the DNC

A woman at the top! It was announced earlier today that Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) will become the new Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee. She will be replacing the current chairman Tim Kaine, who is stepping down to run for Senate in Virginia.

I must say I am totally psyched for this! Rep. Wasserman Schultz is finally getting a chance to show the entire country what she is made of. Now, we just need her gal pal, Rep. Gabrielle Giffords to get better so she can run for Senate in Arizona! Total Girl Power!

Debbie Wasserman Schultz of Florida will succeed Tim Kaine as chair of the Democratic National Committee, placing a rising female lawmaker from a key swing state into one of the most prominent surrogate roles for the Obama reelection campaign. Currently a party vice chair, Wasserman Schultz, 44, was the first Jewish woman elected to Congress from Florida, and she is serving her fourth term representing the state's 20th Congressional District. She will continue to serve in the House.Vice President Joe Biden announced the selection in an email to Democratic supporters Tuesday evening, praising "her tenacity, her strength, her fighting spirit, and her ability to overcome adversity." "President Obama expressed great admiration for her as a leader, and he was honored that she accepted this important challenge on behalf of the Democratic Party," Biden wrote. "No one should have any doubt that Debbie will work hard to strengthen our party and our country."

Caroline Kennedy released her new book 'She Walks in Beauty'

Caroline Kennedy released her new book, 'She Walks in Beauty' today. The daughter of former president John F. Kennedy, Jr. and first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, has published this new poetry book filled with reflections on her life as a woman, wife, and mother. The book is divided into different sections that highlight some of the most important parts of a woman's life like hitting age milestones or having your first baby. This is Kennedy's third book. She previously edited two other poetry books, "A Family of Poems: My Favorite Poetry for Children" and "The Best-Loved Poems of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson featured in Time Magazine

Time Magazine recently asked EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson ten questions on its website. Ms. Jackson has been in the news a lot lately with many members of Congress demanding more oversight of her agency and even threatening to defund it. She spoke with the magazine about those issues and several others in light of the controversy.

From Time:

Two of your Republican predecessors recently wrote that the EPA is "under siege" from the GOP. Is there a war against the EPA? There are certainly some members of Congress who have come in with an agenda that includes this agency. We hear words like scaling back and defunding.A key point of contention is EPA regulations that could be coming on greenhouse gases.

What is the EPA looking to do on this issue? We're talking about updating standards under the Clean Air Act to address pollution. Although I joined the President in calling for legislation, that doesn't mean we can't get started using the Clean Air Act to take a series of moderate steps that would add up to real reduction. 

Why should the EPA be regulating carbon?Because it's the law. The Clean Air Act and Supreme Court cases have said the EPA must determine whether greenhouse gases endanger public health. We have determined, based on multiple lines of scientific evidence, that they do.
