President Obama presented the Medal of Freedom awards today at the White House. The award is the highest civilian honor and is presented to individuals who have made especially meritorious contributions to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors. Some of the recipents today included former president George H.W. Bush, poet Maya Angelou, civil rights pioneer John Lewis, civil rights activist Sylvia Mendez, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma.
