Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-D.C.) was spotted at a departure ceremony for the 273rd Military Police Co. and 121st Criminal Investigation Div. at the District of Columbia Army National Guard Armory yesterday. The units are deploying to Afghanistan to support a Special Forces base and a DOD criminal task force.

In the latest Vogue Magazine, some well known women politicians are gracing their pages to crusade for a new National Women's History Museum. Pictured with Meryl Streep, are the crusaders for a new National Women’s History Museum, from left: NWHM president Joan Wages, Madeleine Albright, Senator Susan Collins, Sen. Barbara Mikulski, Barbara Bush (seated on ground), Rep. Carolyn Maloney, Patricia Nixon Cox, Dr. Maya Angelou and Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton. 

The women are advocating for the first ever national museum dedicated exclusively to women's history in Washington, DC. Currently, the National Women's History Museum and Federal Facilities Consolidation and Efficacy Act of 2011 bill is in the House of Representatives Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure as it awaits passage.

Spotted: Eleanor Holmes Norton participating in the National Food Stamp Challenge at Safeway

Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) was spotted at Safeway grocery store yesterday with local DC resident Vanessa Sherrie to kick off the National Food Stamp Challenge. The challenge asks participants spend $31.50 on a week's worth of groceries, which is the average allotment of the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, formerly called Food Stamps. Also seen with Del. Norton was Reps. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Jan Schakowsky, (D-Ill), and Donna Christensen, (D-V.I).

DC Post Office renamed to honor Dr. Dorothy Height

Dr. Dorothy Height, the acclaimed civil rights leader was memorialized today at a local DC Post Office today. The post office located at 2 Massachusetts Avenue is the first post office to be named for an African American woman. Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) sponsored the bill to honor Ms. Height, who passed last year.

President Obama names Post Office afer Civil Rights Leader Dr. Dorthy Height

President Barack Obama signed into law a bill naming a Washington, DC post office after civil rights leader Dr. Dorothy Height earlier today. The bill, H.R. 6118, was introduced into legislation by Eleanor Holmes Norton and was supported by other members of the Congressional Black Caucus, who are pictured above. Dr. Height was the president of the National Council of Negro Women and died in early April. The post office will now be named Dorothy I. Height Post Office. This is the first time a federal building in Washington, DC has been named for an African American woman.

I had the chance to meet Dr. Height a couple of months before she passed and I must say she was everything that I thought she was. Even at 98, she was so kind and full of wisdom, and gladly took questions from our group. I pray that she is resting in peace.
