Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Rep. Allyson Schwartz urge agreement on payroll tax extension

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), along with Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa) and members of the House democratic caucus held a news conference yesterday in the Capitol Visitor Center to urge an agreement in the payroll tax break extension. Before the holiday break, Congress only authorized the extension to end of February. The payroll tax break provides a tax cut for 160 million workers and saves each family about $1,000 a year.

Hard at work on Capitol Hill! Sen. Dianne Feinstein, (D-Calif) was spotted this week leaving a procedural vote on the payroll tax extension bill. Also House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, (D-Calif) was spotted conducting her weekly news conference in the Capitol Visitor Center.

Leader Pelosi gave the group of about 30 people ten pieces of advice about living a fulfilling life. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was in Washington, DC today to celebrate the retirement of her husband, Captain Mark Kelly. Capt. Kelly has been in the military for twenty five years, including stints an astronaut and a Navy captain. On hand at today's ceremony was Vice President Joe Biden and Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi.

So good to see Rep. Giffords out and about - and smiling!

Nancy Pelosi attends the New Yorker Festival over the weekend

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was in New York City today to attend the New Yorker Festival. The annual event, now in its twelfth year, brings notable writers, artists, and visionaries together to discuss issues like film, music, and politics. The event was held over the weekend and Pelosi was the featured guest on Sunday afternoon. She was interviewed by New Yorker writer Jane Mayer on a variety of topics including her family life, her time in Congress, and her success in passing health care form.

She also talked about one of our favorite topics here at Political Girl - the need for more women to get involved in politics. On the topic, she said, "There is nothing more wholesome for the political process than for women to participate." Agreed!

Look who we spotted chatting it up with Tony Bennett. None other than Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi. She was in New York on Sunday to attend Tony Bennett's 85th Birthday Gala Benefit for Exploring the Arts at The Metropolitan Opera House. She was accompanied by her husband Paul Pelosi.

Spotted: Nancy Pelosi greeting the Dalai Lama

Came across these pictures this morning. Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi was spotted talking to Dalai Lama when he was in town to give a speech at the National Mall. (Over 20,000 were in attendance on Saturday and Whoopi Goldberg emceed). The Dalai Lama also stopped by Capitol Hill last week and had a meeting with Leader Pelosi and Rep. John Boehner.

Spotlight: Nancy Pelosi featured in the Washington Post

Fly as she wants to be! Nancy Pelosi was featured over the weekend in a profile over at the Washington Post. The article focused on her goal of winning back the House in 2012 for the democrats which she calls the " faith based initiative." She also mentions that there is no tension between her and the White House (the media says there is) and how she has yet to hang any pictures in her new smaller office.

Nancy Pelosi was spotted on Capitol Hill yesterday introducing new legislation. Called "Make it in America", she along with other Democrats want this bill to spur job creation through investments in education, energy innovation, and infrastructure.

Can women have a seat at the table, please? Pres. Obama hosted a meeting with the House and Senate leadership on the budget policy at the White House on Wednesday. These photos stuck out in mind because Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi is the only woman at the table! This photo just really minds me how important it is for women to become more involved in politics.

In memoriam: A look back at the life of Geraldine Ferraro


Geraldine Anne Ferraro, the first female Vice Presidential candidate representing a major American political party, passed Saturday after a 12 year battle with multiple myeloma. The fereious women's right supporter first started her career in the House of Representatives, representing New York's 9th Congressional District (Queens) for three 2 year terms from 1978 - 1982.

After rumblings that it was time for a woman to be on a major party ticket, Walter Mondale selected Ferraro to be his Vice-Presidential candidate in the summer of 1984. With her nominiation, she became not only the first woman to run on a major party national ticket in the United States but also the first Italian American.


"We've chosen the path to equality, don't let them turn us around." — Geraldine Ferraro

After the loss of the election, Ferrano ran unsuccessfully for the Senate and then went on to accept an ambassorship to the United Nations Commission to Human Rights. During that time she also wrote to best selling books, Ferraro: My Story and  Changing History: Women, Power and Politics. 
Until her death, was an avid supporter for women rights and equality in our political arena. She was 75.

Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi traveled to Afghanistan on Saturday with several other lawmakers including Reps. Rosa DeLauro (D-CN.), John Mica (R-FL), Leonard Boswell (D-IO) and Bill Pascrell (D-N.J.). While in the region, she visited our troops based there and met with young girls at school in Marjah, Afghanistan.
