Glamour Magazine held its 21st annual Women of the Year awards ceremony yesterday in New York City honoring women in various sectors including politics, entertainment, fashion, and humanitarian work. The women honored included Jennifer Lopez, Tory Burch, Arianna Huffington, Laura Bush, Barbara Bush & Jenna Bush Hager, Chelsea Handler, Withelma “T” Ortiz-Macey, Gabrielle Giffords, Lea Michele, Cindy Sherman, Esraa Abdel Fattah, and the Lifetime Achievement Award was given to Gloria Steinem. Laura Bush and former President George W. Bush was spotted at the Pentagon to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Sept.11 attacks. They observed a moment of silence as well as participated in a wreath laying ceremony with other federal officials. Former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and his wife, Joyce Rumsfeld also joined them at the Pentagon.

The Dalai Lama was spotted visiting Pres. George Bush, his wife former first lady Laura Bush, and their daughter Barbara Bush. He is providing some documents to the George W. Bush Institute (presidential library) and posed with the family a couple of weeks ago. 

Laura Bush tours new teen center in St. Louis named in her honor

Former first lady Laura Bush was spotted last week touring the new Laura Bush Teen Center at the Bridgeton Trails Branch in St. Louis, MI. The new teen center boasts free internet service - and has been a hot spot for teens and adults alike after the recent storms the area. The center was also funded in part by money that was raised when the former first lady in St. Louis last year discussing her memoir.

A couple of former presidents and first ladies gathered last night at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC. Presidents Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, George. H.W. Bush, and George W. Bush were joined by their wives (except Secretary of State Hillary Clinton), Rosalynn Carter, Barbara Bush, and Laura Bush for the "All Together Now - A Celebration of Service" performance in honor of former President George H. W. Bush.

Spotted: Laura Bush in DC for the CARE International annual conference

Former first lady Laura Bush was in town this week to celebrate the 100th anniversary of International Women's Day, as well as to speak at the annual conference of CARE International, a nonprofit organization that seeks to raise awareness about the benefits of maternal and infant health programs. Also on hand for the speech were her twin daughters, Barbara and Jenna who introduced her to the crowd of 1200 attendees gathered at the dinner.

Since 1971, we have celebrated President Day to celebrate and honor all past presidents including the most famous two who was born on in February - Abraham Lincoln (February 12) and George Washington (February 22). Presidents' Day was established by President Nixon and is observed on the 3rd Monday of February. Well, we here at Political Girl got to thinking - why not honor those incredible women standing by these presidents.

Laura Bush launches 'Middle School Matters'

First Lady Michelle Obama isn't the only one announcing new initiatives today. Former First Lady Laura Bush announced a new plan to combat high school graduation rates by focusing on middle school students in Dallas today. In conjunction with President Bush's Presidential Library, Mrs. Bush will work with the the Bush Institute on the project which already focuses on education reform, global health, human freedom and economic growth.

From the AP:

"We know now from research that a lot of kids that drop out in high school really drop out in middle school," she said. "They just leave in high school." She added, "One of the goals will be making sure they are prepared for high school." For the program, the institute has compiled research by various institutions on what determines success in middle schools and plans to take that information to work with middle schools to implement new practices. The program focuses on 11 elements for success, including school leadership, reading interventions, effective teachers, dropout prevention, and school, student, family and community support. The Bush Institute's research team has come up with specific measures that can be taken in the classroom to improve performance in all of these.

Laura Bush, along with her husband former President George Bush was spotted at yesterday's Superbowl game at Cowboys Stadium. Sitting with football legend John Madden, the presidential couple saw the Green Bay Packers defeat the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25.
